The Rincon Rotary helps grow student leaders through the care of Mijo the Desert Tortoise at Miles Exploratory Learning Center

For over 20 years, the staff and students at the Miles Exploratory Learning Center have been the caretakers of a beloved desert tortoise named Mijo. Last year, the Rincon Rotary gave the school native food plants for Mijo's habitat. The good news is that Mijo loved them! The bad news is that he often ate them down to the ground, so in the interest of feeding Mijo in an ongoing manner, the school asked for help building a supplemental food garden outside his habbitat. The Rincon Rotary believes in second chances, and not making the same mistake twice, so we partnered with local buinsess, Spadefoot Nursery to help build a secondary garden to feed Mijo.

The Rincon Rotary's support is part of its Rotary LOCAL program, whose mission is to help improve the local community through educational outreach. Rotary LOCAL can provide manpower, resources from local business partners, or in some cases, direct financial support to teachers who apply for assistance. Rotary LOCAL is funded in part by our annual Taste of Chocolate event, a great way to sample local sweets and help teachers at the same time.
